Use Data

Whether you've gotten data from your own experiments or simulations, from a colleague, from DataONE, or from another data source, DataONE provides tools that enable you to use that data, keep good metadata, make it easier for you and others in your group to reuse that data later, and enable the reuse of that data by the broader scientific community when you're ready to share it (see Contribute Data for more information about depositing data into a DataONE Member Node).

Best Practices for Using Data

There isn't any one size fits all for using data. Different scientific problems and different groups have different needs for the ways data gets collected, quality checked, analyzed, managed, and shared. Across all of those, however, DataONE has some Best Practices for working with data. Following these best practices takes some time and thought as you use data, but pays off even in being able to find and reuse your own data later one.

DataONE Investigator Toolkit

The DataONE Investigator Toolkit includes tools that are designed to simplify the processes of finding data, getting data, and contributing data to DataONE. These tools don't have to be used with DataONE, and many are existing tools that have been adapted so that they can read and write using the DataONE programming interfaces.

Other Data Tools

DataONE has a database of other Software Tools that may be useful in using data. This catalog is a result of two NSF-funded workshops hosted by DataONE.
